Carbon to Sea is currently soliciting proposals to develop a technical report that evaluates opportunities to integrate ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) with municipal wastewater treatment technologies. This report is intended to assess potential climate, human health, and environmental benefits, while serving as foundational knowledge for future public engagement and policy dialogue.
As the global population grows, the systems and infrastructure keeping society functional must evolve alongside it. Often overlooked, wastewater treatment is emerging as a new climate challenge. Wastewater treatment accounts for an estimated 3-7% of global greenhouse gas emissions today and, in some regions, exacerbates ocean acidification.
Updated alkalinity practices in municipal wastewater treatment may have the potential to mitigate climate impacts while reducing costs and improving climate and environmental outcomes.
This RFP seeks proposals for a report to examine existing technical and scientific knowledge in order to evaluate the geographic feasibility, climate impacts, operational considerations, and outline risks and recommendations for future efforts.
We’re seeking to evaluate the extent of this promise through one four-month award of up to $125,000 USD.
Proposal applications must be submitted by Friday, March 20, 2026 by 6:00 PM ET, using the form below. Be prepared to upload a detailed proposal and a budget that adhere to the requirements listed in the RFP document with your application.
All proposals will undergo an internal review process by the Carbon to Sea team, and potentially other field experts. Carbon to Sea will make the final award decision.
If you have any questions regarding your submission, please email RFP@carbontosea.org with “WWT RFP” included in the subject line.
