2026 OAE Research
Call for Proposals
The Carbon to Sea Initiative is announcing two Open Calls for Proposals to advance the scientific, technical and social understanding of ocean alkalinity enhancement’s (OAE) viability as a climate mitigation solution.
OAE is among the most promising CDR approaches because it works with Earth’s natural chemistry and the ocean’s vast capacity for carbon storage. Over the past four years, Carbon to Sea’s grant-making has funded research to help validate OAE’s underlying mechanism in lab, mesocosm and small scale trials, and model its potential for impact at global scale. The next test is whether OAE can be verified and scaled responsibly in the real world, which requires both field-based evidence and targeted scientific and technical advances.
The 2026 Open Call for Proposals is structured around these two needs, detailed in the RFP documents below.
1. Global OAE Field Research Network includes four grant types for the exploration, development and coordination of field research sites, inviting global participation to assess environmental impacts at increasing scales, efficacy across deployment methods, measurability of outcomes, sector-specific demonstration and cost trajectories over time.
2. Targeted Research & Innovation funds two priority topics: the influence of natural sediment alkalinity flux on additionality claims of carbon removal (2A – Sediment Additionality) and innovation in alkalinity sourcing and production (2B – Alkalinity Innovation).
Interested parties should submit a pre-proposal by September 30, 2026. Selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals in October.

Carbon to Sea intends to fund a portfolio of awards totaling up to $5,000,000 USD for the Global Field Research Network, and up to $1,000,000 USD for Targeted Research & Innovation through a two-stage application process; please see application guidelines below.
1. Global OAE Field Research Network
This Open Call is designed to establish a network of field research sites for the study of OAE. This opportunity is best suited for organizations with a long-term vision for field science or development in a specific location. Proposed projects would reflect one or more of the following characteristics:
- The site and program are designed for sustained, multi-year use, not a single deployment or trial.
- Over time, the site is able to serve as a shared resource for the broader OAE research community, with the opportunity to support multiple studies or teams.
- The site enables testing of lab and mesocosm findings under real-world, representative conditions, building an evidence base that compounds research value.
2. Targeted Research & Innovation
This Open Call is best suited for research and development teams that aim to propose a short term, specific project under one of two grant types: advancing understanding of how OAE interacts with sediment-related alkalinity fluxes or advancing innovative technologies or methods that improve the production or performance of alkalinity sources. Though fieldwork is still welcome, it is not a necessary component of these grants. Proposed projects would reflect one or more of the following characteristics:
- Research or development plan designed to answer a specific and well-defined hypothesis or key research question
- A controlled experimental environment, such as laboratory or mesocosm setting or a discrete field trial. Complementary modeling experiments are also in scope.
