In partnership with the Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR), Carbon to Sea Canada is launching a call for proposals (CFPs) to lead the next phase of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and river alkalinity enhancement (RAE) research in Canada.
Canada is especially well positioned to help answer some of the field’s most important outstanding questions, with the world’s longest coastline, world-class marine research infrastructure, and OAE/RAE field research already underway. We are particularly interested in work that advances three priority areas for OAE/RAE research in Canada:
1. Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV): improving the measurements and models needed to quantify carbon removal and assess its efficiency, durability, and scalability.
2. Environmental and ecological impacts: strengthening our understanding of how alkalinity enhancement – and different materials and delivery approaches – affects marine and river systems under realistic conditions.
3. Governance, communities, and decision-making: building the social, economic, regulatory, and governance evidence needed for responsible research, including meaningful engagement with Indigenous rights holders, host communities, and other affected parties.
Projects may be up to 18 months in duration, from April 1, 2027, to October 31, 2028, with a maximum request of $150,000 CAD. The total funding envelope for this call is approximately $1 million CAD.
Application Guide
Applications will be evaluated, in part, on their ability to engage diverse teams and audiences effectively, demonstrating a commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility and Truth and Reconciliation principles. Applicants do not need to address every area. We are looking for focused projects that can materially close an important knowledge gap and help inform responsible OAE/RAE research, policy, or future decision-making in Canada.
